So, I'm trying to decide on my Wiccan name. I had always kind of gone with Cahira, which is Celtic/Gaelic for Warrior. I had given that name to my puppy (who I no longer have), and I really liked the name. But, to be perfectly honest, it didn't feel "right." So, I decided to look up names & see what I found. It took me a while, but I found some Egyptian & native names that I really like (Celtic just didn't seem to fit). So here are some names with meanings & origins (if known). Let me know what you think. I plan on meditating on this as well, but feedback is always good, too
Aiyana - native - Forever blossoming
Akila - Egyptian - Intelligent
Ankti - Hopi - Repeat dance
Chenoa - native - Dove
Huyana - Miwok - Falling Rain
Kawika - Egyptian - Black
Masika - Egyptian - Born during rain (which I was)
Namid - Cheyenne - Star Dancer
Naunet - Egyptian - goddess of the ocean
Orenda - Iroquois - Magic Power
Talibah - Egyptian - Seeks knowledge

That's so cool that you get to choose a Wiccan name. I always thought that names given at birth were too arbitrary--you know nothing of the baby's character yet. Perhaps there should be a birthname, but later a name that is given to you at your coming-of-age... It reminds me of in my own religion, where one man's name is changed from Jacob (usurper, supplanter) to Israel (G-d prevails).
I had a name suggestion, but it's Celtic (Welsh, actually): Nwyfre-Caniad, which means "skysong." I don't know any Egyptian or native names... :idunno:
Well, when I was in Wales I couldn't pronounce anything right, and had the locals staring at me as they tried to figure out what I was saying. A town name that is spelled "Llangollen" ends up being pronounced "Htlangothlen"...
But if I had to guess, and if I remember from what Mrs. Roberts told me... I think that Nwyfre-Caniad would be pronounced Noo-freh-Kan-EE-ahd. A little complex--you might be better off with Masika. *grin*
I determined the numerology of my birth name, then chose a magickal name that equalled it. Also, I'm a fire sign, so I chose a magickal name that symbolized water, for balance.
Personally I like Aiyana & Naunet ...but you should go with whatever name fits the best. Pick whatever name "calls" to you.
I feel very strongly about birth names and believe that they should not be taken lightly.
I think it is interesting that part of Wiccan rites is to choose a name to use within the "society" Sounds an awful lot like Catholicism and their confirmation and Native Americans and their coming of age ritual.
Good luck in your name search!

I like Masika, but the others are good as well. If I come across a name, I'll let you know:smile:
